The Good Earth Ch. 1

Wang Lung is a poor man, but for his wedding day he cleans up and purchases some good food. He picks up his wife from the House of Hwang just like picking something up from the store. Wang marries a slave, because Wang is like a slave to his father, and he needs someone to be his slave. He needs to be in control of something, so he chose to be in control of his wife. His father controls his life, and Wang is finally, slowly, getting out of it.
I think that this book could be comedy or tragedy so far. There are many comic symbols like the kitchen, spring, and the garden. But tragedy is also present in the story. Being married and not having to pay as much attention to his dad could be his rise to power.
Women in Wang's culture are treated with no respect, like in A Jury of Her Peers. The Golden Rule tells us to treat others how we would like to be treated. The men in both of these stories don't do that. The women have no rights and whatever they do gets criticized. Wang's marriage will soon turn into the Wright's marriage if nothing is done about it.

  1. Jennifer,
I like how you said that he needed his own slave because he was a slave to his father, I didn't think of that. It made a lot of sense. Next time, try connecting your two paragraphs with a little more text evidence.

  2. Jennifer very nice writing response:) I think you have something going with how you are seeing two kinds of modes. I totally agree with you. Way to go with comparing it to A Jury to Her Peers. Maybe next time you could explain your paragraphs with more detail and evidence from the story to support your ideas a little more.
